Dolph Lundgren Offers Update on His DRAGO Movie and Shares Some Story Details
A little over a year ago, it was announced that MGM Studios was developing a Creed II spinoff movie that would focus on Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago and his son, Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu). The movie is titled Drago, and it’s been a while since we’ve had any updates on the project.
Lundgren recently talked to CinemaBlend, though, and he shared that the project is still in the works, explains what’s going on with it, and also offers up some story details. Lundgren previously shared that the script wasn’t ready and the people involved were “waiting for a new writer to come in and try to shape it.”
The actor has now shared that the success of Creed III is one of the main reasons why the Drago spinoff has been put on the back burner. When asked if the project was still happening, he said:
“Yeah, I think so. MGM was developing the script called Drago about my character and my son. I think what happened was the studio changed leadership, and then Creed III did very well, so they started preparing for Creed IV. This is last year, and then now there is a problem with a co-star in Creed IV. That storyline they had on the Drago script was interesting, it was kind of a coming to America, kind of immigration angle, with me and the son, and it was pretty cool.”
It makes sense that MGM would want to push Creed IV forward, and while Lundgren doesn’t mention who the co-star with the problems is, it’s most likely Jonathan Majors, who played Damian Anderson in Creed III. With the status of Creed IV in question, maybe they will put the focus back on Drago.
As for the story that Drago will tell, the actor explained that it will see Ivan and Viktor moving to the United States post-Creed II. The two characters were last seen in the sequel training together in Ukraine, and it seemed like they had a stronger relationship. As for what brings them to America, Lundgren explains:
“It just so happened that, in Creed II, we're in the Ukraine, in the beginning, we're in Kyiv. That's where the movie opens, even though it's not really mentioned too much. But in the version of the script that I read, it starts with a Russian invasion, and in that, we go through some hard, difficult experiences that makes us want to come to America. It was kind of interesting.”
I would actually love to see this Drago movie get made, there’s a great an interesting story to tell there with these characters. Hopefully, the studio get around to making it!
