DUNE Director Says The Whole Meaning of the Story Becomes Clear With DUNE: MESSIAH
Director Denis Villeneuve’s whole plan for the Dune franchise was to make a trilogy of films. The first film that was released was awesome, and now we’re all waiting for Dune: Part Two to be released. The third film in the series will be Dune: Messiah, which is one of four scripts that he’s currently working on.
During a recent interview with Cine21, the filmmaker offered an update on the film and explained that the whole story of Dune becomes clear in his third chapter of the story. He explained:
"I'm working on four different screenplays -- I know that Dune: Messiah will be one of them, I don't know if it will be the next or the second next. My job was to try to keep the spirit of Frank Herbert alive as much as possible -- the whole meaning of Dune becomes clear with Dune: Messiah."
It’s been reported that WB has already greenlit the third film, so that will happen one day… unless the sequel completely bombs. The filmmaker Previously discussed his plans for a third movie, saying, "There is Dune’s second book, The Messiah of Dune, which could make an extraordinary film. I always saw that there could be a trilogy; after that, we’ll see. It’s years of work; I can’t think of going further than that."
As for when he wants to make the film, he shared: “I don’t know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis. I might make a detour before just to go away from the sun. For my mental sanity I might do something in between, but my dream would be to go a last time on this planet that I love.”
I think Villeneuve should make another film between Dune: Part Two and Dune: Messiah. While I’m excited for him to see this trilogy, though, I’d also like to see what other kind of film project he’s got cooking in that imaginative brain of his.
Dune is a mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, and tells the story of Paul Atreides, “a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.”
This next chapter of the story will explore the “mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”
Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah takes place several years after the events of the first book and follows Paul Atreides, now Emperor of the Known Universe. Paul's rule is marked by political intrigue, religious fervor, and the consequences of his prescient visions. As he navigates the complexities of his position, Paul faces challenges from various factions, including the powerful Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, who seek to control his bloodline. Amidst this turmoil, Paul's relationship with his wife, Chani, and his young children adds a personal dimension to his struggles.
