DUNE: PART THREE Director Denis Villeneuve Explains Why the Final Film Will Be “Very Different”
Paul Atreides’ story is about to take a major turn in Dune: Part Three, and director Denis Villeneuve says fans should expect something quite different from the first two films.
The final chapter of his sci-fi trilogy will jump 17 years into the future, where the characters have changed, the political landscape has shifted, and Paul is dealing with the consequences of his rise to power.
In a recent interview with Empire, Villeneuve explained that while the upcoming sequel will still feel like a Dune movie, he's approaching the story with a different pace and perspective.
“The idea was to try to make a movie that will have the same DNA — it’s a Dune movie — but it’s a very different movie. It has a different pacing. We are back with the same characters, but this time the world has totally changed.”
That change comes largely from the film's 17-year time jump, which puts some serious distance between the events of Dune: Part Two and where we find these characters now.
Villeneuve explained that their “perspective on reality has totally changed.” Paul, in particular, is no longer the young man fighting to reclaim his family's place in the universe. He's now an emperor whose actions have unleashed devastating consequences.
According to Villeneuve, Paul “is living with the burden of what he created, trying to find a way out of this spiral of violence.”
That's an interesting direction for the character, especially after watching his transformation throughout the first two movies. Paul achieved the power he was fighting for, but ruling the universe comes with a pretty horrific price.
Based primarily on Frank Herbert's novel Dune Messiah, the third film will explore Paul's reign as a ruthless emperor and the growing threats against him.
Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, with Anya Taylor-Joy taking on a much larger role as his sister, Alia Atreides. Alia briefly appeared in Paul's visions in the previous film, but she'll be an important part of the story this time around as she helps protect her brother from a dangerous conspiracy being organized by his enemies.
As the daughter of a Reverend Mother, Alia was born with extraordinary abilities that make her unlike anyone else around her. It'll be interesting to see how Taylor-Joy brings this unusual character to life, especially considering Chalamet has already praised her performance in the film.
The cast also includes Florence Pugh, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Jason Momoa, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, Ida Brooke, Josh Brolin, and Rebecca Ferguson.
Dune: Part Three isn't just continuing Paul's journey to power. It's exploring what happens after he's achieved it, and whether there's any way to escape the violence he's responsible for.
Villeneuve has already delivered two incredible sci-fi films, and seeing him close out the trilogy with a story that challenges everything Paul has become sounds like a fitting conclusion.
Dune: Part Three arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
