DUNE: PART THREE Drops a Teaser Trailer With a Huge IMAX Surprise for Fans

Arrakis is calling us back, and this time fans won’t have to wait quite as long as expected. A new 33-second teaser for Dune: Part Three has arrived, and while it doesn’t give away much of the movie itself, it does come with a pretty great announcement: audiences will have a chance to see the film several days before its official release.

Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune movie is officially scheduled to open on December 18, 2026, but select IMAX 70mm theaters across the United States and Canada will begin screening the film on December 14. Even better, tickets for those early screenings are already on sale.

The rollout continues on December 15 with early showtimes at all IMAX theaters. Then, beginning December 17, regular screenings will kick off at 2 p.m. local time. So, depending on where you live and what format you’re looking for, you could be returning to Arrakis up to four days early.

And if there was ever a Dune movie worth seeking out on the biggest screen possible, this sounds like the one.

Villeneuve has said the movie was “dreamed, designed and shot” specifically for IMAX, and the production took that commitment further than either of the previous films. Dune: Part Three is the first movie in the franchise shot using both IMAX-certified digital cameras and IMAX film cameras.

The production also used the advanced IMAX Keighley Film Camera in an effort to push the image quality even further. On top of that, the film features a special sound mix created specifically for IMAX theaters.

Villeneuve previously directed Dune: Part One in 2021 and Dune: Part Two in 2024, but his collaboration with IMAX became even more involved for the third chapter. The filmmaker worked closely with the IMAX team, tested cameras, and conducted reviews at the company’s headquarters as part of the process of getting the presentation exactly where he wanted it.

Basically, if you’ve been wondering whether it’s worth hunting down an IMAX screening instead of catching Dune: Part Three on a standard screen, Villeneuve has made his preference pretty clear.

The new film is based on the work of Frank Herbert and picks up with Paul Atreides dealing with the consequences of everything that unfolded in Dune: Part Two. The official synopsis reads:

“Emperor Paul Atreides faces the fallout from his ascent to power as political plots and a galaxy-wide holy war endanger the future only he can see.”

That sets up a much darker chapter for Paul, whose rise to power has put him at the center of a conflict that reaches far beyond Arrakis.

Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, with Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach De Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, Javier Bardem, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, and Ida Brooke rounding out the cast.

The movie reportedly clocks in at 140 minutes, giving Villeneuve plenty of time to dig into the political fallout, religious warfare, and personal consequences facing Paul as his story moves into its next phase.

After the epicness of Dune: Part Two, it’ll be interesting to see just how far Villeneuve pushes the cinematic experience with Dune: Part Three. Shooting with multiple IMAX camera systems and creating a dedicated IMAX sound mix certainly suggests he’s treating the format as an essential part of the movie rather than an optional upgrade.

For fans who want the full experience, December 14 is now the date to circle. Everyone else can catch Dune: Part Three when its official theatrical release arrives on December 18, 2026.
