Early SUPERGIRL Reactions Hint at a Strong Film for the DCU’s Next Chapter

The DCU is gearing up for its next big leap with Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and if early reactions are any indication, fans might be in for something pretty awesome.

While this isn’t a James Gunn directed project, it is still very much tethered to the vision he’s building for the new DC Universe. With the movie deep in post production and its first trailer expected soon, we now have the first wave of early reaction chatter to dig into.

Studios rely heavily on test screenings to understand how a movie is shaping up, and although public screenings for Supergirl haven’t happened yet, an early cut was reportedly shown to Warner Bros. executives and a few select viewers on the lot. As usually happens, those reactions have begun to drift online.

An X user, @BlackMajikMan90, shared, "I’ve heard from multiple people in SAG that Supergirl is amazing," which led scooper Daniel Richtman to chime in with, "I’ve heard the same as well, that the movie is very good."

Another user, @DeadmanBostonB, added, "I know someone who was at a test screening, he said it had a very positive reception and foresees the movie being very well received."

If these comments are legit, Supergirl may be in strong shape as it heads toward its summer 2026 debut. It’s also a reassuring sign for what is being branded as “The Superman Saga,” especially with James Gunn keeping a firm hand on the overarching direction.

Gunn was heavily involved from the start, particularly in casting Milly Alcock, so the project appears aligned with the larger DCU vision.

The first trailer for Supergirl is expected within the next couple of weeks, and it may even drop this weekend during the studio’s presence at CCXP in Brazil. Whenever it lands, fans are sure to comb through every frame the moment it hits the internet.

David Krumholtz, who plays Zor El, recently offered some insight into the film’s tone and inspiration, saying, "It's very true to the graphic novel that it’s based on, Woman of Tomorrow. Which is great. I’m thrilled to be sort of the next piece of telling the story of Krypton and sort of further clarifying what the House of El is all about."

Krumholtz also addressed one of the big elements fans have been curious about, adding, "everybody knows that Jason Momoa is playing Lobo in it...it’s [the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow] comic plus Lobo."

There’s no doubt this is going to be a wild, cosmic adventure that leans directly into what made Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic so striking.

The film follows Kara Zor El as she journeys across the galaxy to celebrate her twenty first birthday with Krypto the Superdog. During her travels she crosses paths with a young woman named Ruthye, eventually joining her on a violent mission for revenge.

The cast is packed with strong talent. Milly Alcock leads the film as Kara Zor El, joined by Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Jason Momoa as Lobo, David Krumholtz as Zor El, Emily Beecham as Alura In Ze, and Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll.

With a grounded emotional core, a cosmic revenge odyssey, and early reactions that paint a promising picture, Supergirl could turn out to be one of the most exciting entries in the early DCU slate.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow flies into theaters on June 26, 2026.
