James Gunn Offers Updates on CLAYFACE, MAN OF TOMORROW, and More DCU Projects
DC Studios has a packed slate on the horizon and James Gunn just offered fans a fresh look at how things are shaping up behind the scenes. In a recent exchange on Threads, the DC Studios co-CEO shared what he’s been juggling across projects like Clayface, Man of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and the upcoming Lanterns series.
When a fan asked Gunn what an average day looks like for him, he didn’t pretend there was anything routine about it. He explained that there was no “average day,” since his workload constantly shifts across the various films and series in development.
He shared that he’s currently deep in storyboard sessions and department meetings for Man of Tomorrow, the highly anticipated Superman sequel that centers on Superman and Lex Luthor teaming up to take on Brainiac. He also mentioned that scouting and casting remain ongoing as the project continues to take shape.
Gunn revealed that he’s also focused on cuts of both Supergirl and Lanterns. He noted that part of his attention is now turning toward figuring out marketing approaches for these projects as they move further along in post production.
With Supergirl arriving June 26, 2026, audiences will see Milly Alcock step into the role of Kara Zor El. The movie follows Kara as she meets young Ruthye Marye Knoll and joins her on a dark journey of vengeance.
Not long after that comes Clayface on September 11, 2026, starring Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen in a story penned by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Gunn said he’s still waiting to see the first cut of the film.
Meanwhile, Lanterns is gearing up for HBO sometime in 2026. The series brings the Green Lantern mythos into the DCU with a cast that includes Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, and others round out the ensemble.
Gunn also touched on the world of Batman. He shared that he’s currently focused on “supporting the Batman 2 crew” to help ensure Matt Reeves’ next chapter “goes smoothly.”
Across the calendar, DC Studios has a stacked lineup. After Supergirl and Clayface hit in 2026, fans will get Lanterns later that same year. Then in 2027, things ramp up with Man of Tomorrow arriving July 9, followed by The Batman: Part II on October 1.
From casting updates to production milestones, Gunn’s latest comments paint a picture of a DCU that’s steadily coming together. With multiple films and series pushing forward, the next era of the DC Universe looks like it’s on track to deliver some exciting storytelling across the board.
