Edgar Wright Reportedly in Talks To Direct Sydney Sweeney's BARBARELLA Remake
It’s been about a year since it was announced that Sydney Sweeney was set to star in and produce a remake of Jane Fonda’s 1968 "sexploitation" sci-fi movie, Barbarella. Now a new report has surfaced from industry insider Daniel Richtman saying that Edgar Wright is in talks to direct the movie.
As of right now, no writer or director has been connected to the project, but Wright would be an interesting choice! I’m a huge fan of Wright’s work which includes Hot Fuzz, Last Night in Soho, Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, and more. He’s got such a fun and wild filmmaking style and it seems like Barbarella is a project he would do something cool and unique with.
Wright has talked about being a fan of the original film in the past, and he’s included it on his best-of-all-time lists. So, this is something that he’s most likely interested in.
The movie will be based on Jean Claude Forest's French comic book series, the story of which is set in the 41st century, and the president of Earth sends space adventurer Barbarella on a mission to retrieve a scientist. She crash lands on a planet and explores its strange customs after a man rescues her from captivity. She has to stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy.
Sweeney previously talked about the film and teased her excitement for it, saying: “There’s so many things. I mean, Jane Fonda, she created such an incredible, iconic character. And I want to, hopefully, just fill those shoes and give more to a whole new generation – her outfits, sci-fi, the fun of the story. So I’m looking forward to it.”
What are your thoughts on Edgar Wright possibly directing this movie?
