EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 Reportedly Set to Begin Filming in Late 2026

It looks like we may finally be heading back into the time loop. According to the latest issue of Production Weekly, Edge of Tomorrow 2 is on track to start filming in “late” 2026 with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt both set to return.

Director Doug Liman has never hidden his desire to make a sequel, and he’s admitted Warner Bros. has kept pushing for it over the years.

The director previously said “The script is ready.” Matthew Robinson (The Invention Of Lying) pitched a take on the story to the studio and they apparently loved it, and he was hired to write the script. I assume this involves the story that has been teased in the past.

Liman said that he likes the story for the sequel more than the first film and explained that it would revolutionize how people make sequels. He also said, “we’re gonna make it if we really believe in it. We have a story that the three of us love, so we’re working hard on the script."

Liman also revealed that he and Cruise revisited the original film, which only reignited their interest in continuing the story. When asked if the sequel was dead, Liman made it clear that it’s still very much alive:

“No, we keep talking about it. We love that world. Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years. I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.’”

It’s been a full decade since the first movie hit theaters, but the passion from everyone involved hasn’t faded. Liman, Cruise, and Blunt have all said multiple times that they’d love to return for another chapter.

Released in 2014, Edge of Tomorrow was based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel All You Need Is Kill. The film followed Cruise as a soldier caught in a deadly time loop, reliving the same battle over and over in an attempt to stop an alien invasion.

While it only earned a moderate $370 million at the global box office, the movie has since built a strong reputation as one of the smartest and most thrilling sci-fi action films of the past decade.

For Liman, that kind of lasting impact matters more than an opening weekend splash. He previously said:

“I haven’t necessarily always had the good fortune of having movies that have huge opening weekends. Bourne Identity lost to Scooby-Doo [on] its opening weekend. And Swingers came and went from the theaters. What I’ve come to understand is, I’m making movies for the long term.

I’m an ego-driven guy, I’d like to get accolades now. But I also recognize that, if I was given the choice, I’ll choose making films that people 50 years from now are still watching.”

Back in 2019, Warner Bros. officially announced development on Edge of Tomorrow 2, but news has been scarce ever since. Cruise’s new deal with the studio to develop films has only fueled speculation that the long-awaited sequel could be part of that partnership.

Blunt also confirmed late last year that she’s still in touch with Liman about returning. She was open about the challenges of revisiting the project after so much time has passed, but she’s hopeful it can still happen:

“Doug and I talk all the time about it. I know Tom wants to do it, hopefully, at some point. But it’s timing, but it’s also been 10 years since we made it…There was an amazing script in the works, but I think it would only have worked if we shot it eight years ago. I’m not saying we’re that ancient, but you have to factor in it’s been 10 years.”

So while nothing is set in stone just yet, it seems the gears might finally turning. With Liman, Cruise, and Blunt still passionate about this world, fans may not have to wait too much longer to see Edge of Tomorrow 2 finally become a reality.
