Elisabeth Moss Confirms She’s “Working On” THE INVISIBLE MAN 2 and Explains the Long Wait
When The Invisible Man hit theaters in 2020, it was an unexpected hit that reimagined the classic Universal monster in a grounded, terrifying way.
Written and directed by Leigh Whannell, the film earned strong reviews, pulled in impressive box office numbers, and delivered a gripping performance from Elisabeth Moss as Cecilia, a woman trying to break free from an abusive relationship.
A sequel was confirmed to be in development last year, but updates on The Invisible Man 2 have been scarce, especially since Whannell has been vocal about not wanting to force a sequel, saying he was satisfied with the first film’s ending. But now Moss is offering a hopeful update.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Moss admitted there’s no official news to share, but she confirmed the team’s passion for the project hasn’t faded. She said, “I wish I did. We still want one, so we’re still working on it.”
It’s been five years since the film’s release, and while that wait feels long, Moss defended the slower approach. She explained that Universal and producer Jason Blum could have rushed something out just to make a profit, but instead chose to wait until the right story came along.
Moss elaborated:
“It was out for two weeks before COVID and made hundreds of millions of dollars. We could have easily just churned out a sequel and thrown it up on streaming and called it a day, and I think some people would've made money off of that.”
“I am so grateful to Universal and Blum for not doing that and for having a standard that's unusual in these circumstances and really wanting it to be worth doing. So it's an unusual thing, but that doesn't usually happen. But I feel like it's important. We love that movie so much. The people who made it – we're so proud of it.”
“We really want to make sure [that] if we do a sequel, it's worthy and it's going to have to be as good if not better. So that's been kind of what's slowed us down. But I don't think that's a bad thing. I think if we're going to do it, it's got to be right. But we still want to do it. We're still working on it. We just have to get the right script together.”
Moss’s comments show just how much care is going into the development of The Invisible Man 2. Rather than rushing into production to cash in on the original’s success, the team wants to ensure that the sequel can meet or even surpass expectations.
It also echoes Whannell’s own hesitation about returning to the story, since he didn’t want to undermine the ending of the first film with an unnecessary follow-up. But with Moss confirming that work is being done, fans can at least be reassured that the project is still alive.
So while the wait continues, it looks like The Invisible Man 2 could be shaping up to be a carefully crafted continuation rather than a rushed cash-grab, but let’s be honest, that what it really is. All sequels are an attempt at a cash grab!
