Ella Purnell Joins Nicholas Galitzine in Seductive Thriller THE RETURN OF STANLEY ATWELL
Ella Purnell keeps building one of the most interesting streaks in entertainment right now, and her latest move drops her into a twisted, high-stakes thriller alongside Nicholas Galitzine.
The project is The Return of Stanley Atwell, a dark and seductive new film from director Brian Welsh that already sounds packed with secrets, betrayal, and messy family drama.
Purnell, known for roles in Fallout, Sweetpea, and Yellowjackets, steps into a story that seems like a great for this project with her ability to balance charm with something a little more dangerous. And with Galitzine leading the charge as the mysterious Stanley Atwell, this pairing has some potential.
The film centers on Stanley Atwell, a man long believed dead who suddenly resurfaces after escaping ten years of unexplained captivity. His return throws his wealthy family into chaos.
His sister Beatrice is already fighting to claim the inheritance he left behind, but things spiral quickly when he shows up alive. Purnell plays Pamela, a close friend who sees opportunity in the confusion and begins pulling strings in ways that may not end well for anyone involved.
The logline promises plenty of intrigue: “sex, passion, backstabbing and betrayal wreak havoc across the estate as the lies and deception the Atwell name has been built upon start to unravel. How far is each family member willing to go to protect their own wealth and status… and what is really behind the return of Stanley Atwell?”
Director Brian Welsh clearly knows what Purnell brings to the table and sounds genuinely excited about what she’ll do with the role. He said:
“Ella has an incredible ability to move between vulnerability, humour and danger. She’s a wonderfully versatile actor and I’m thrilled to have her joining Nicholas in The Return of Stanley Atwell. It’s a brilliant combination and I look forward to seeing Ella make the role her own.”
Producer Liza Marshall echoed that enthusiasm, adding, “Ella is a remarkable talent whose performances are consistently both mercurial and deeply affecting. We’re thrilled she’s leading the film alongside Nicholas and can’t wait to see her bring Pamela to life.”
John Gore of John Gore Studios also weighed in, saying: “Ella Purnell brings a magnetic screen presence, remarkable emotional nuance, and an instinct for making complex characters feel utterly authentic. We are thrilled to have her onboard. We’re also delighted to be collaborating with Hera Pictures and Brian Welsh on such a bold and provocative story.”
The project comes from Hera Pictures, the award-winning company behind Hamnet, and is co-produced with John Gore Studios. It’s also backed by an original story from Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, who serves as executive producer.
Production is gearing up to shoot in the U.K. and Malta.
