Elon Musk Says Grok Will Make a "Historically Accurate" THE ODYSSEY Movie by the End of the Year
Elon Musk has thrown another unexpected idea into the mix, and this one takes aim at one of the biggest movies of the year.
The tech billionaire says his AI platform, Grok Imagine, will create a full-length adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey before the end of 2026, and he’s promising it will be "historically accurate and true to the art of Homer."
The announcement obviously caught people's attention because Musk has spent months criticizing Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, making it hard not to see this as a direct response to the filmmaker’s blockbuster adaptation.
The latest comment came Tuesday night on X after Musk replied to a user who shared AI-generated footage inspired by The Odyssey. Musk wrote:
“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”
That was the extent of the announcement. He didn’t explain how the project would be made, who would be involved, or whether it would actually be released to the public. Still, it’s a pretty wild promise considering the scale of the undertaking.
Musk’s issues with Nolan’s The Odyssey go back months. In January, after social media users criticized the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, Musk declared that Chris Nolan had “lost his integrity” after a post described the casting as “an insult to the author.”
He continued that criticism in May after commentator Matt Walsh claimed Nolan only cast Nyong’o to avoid accusations of racism. Musk replied: “True.”
His commentary didn’t stop there. He also reacted to a transphobic rumor aimed at Elliot Page, who plays Sinon in Nolan’s adaptation, calling the post a: “banger”
Despite the online criticism, Nolan’s film has thrived. The epic adventure, starring Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya, has become a major box office success, earning $264 million worldwide while also receiving strong reviews from critics.
As if one Odyssey adaptation wasn’t enough, Musk also entertained another fan pitch that would take the story in a completely different direction.
A user suggested Musk bankroll a live-action version directed by Mel Gibson, writing that he should give: “Mel Gibson $100 million to film an Odyssey adaptation with painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek.”
Musk’s response was short and to the point: “down”
Whether either of these projects ever becomes reality is anyone’s guess. Neither Gibson nor representatives for Musk have commented publicly, and there’s no indication that either adaptation has moved beyond social media posts.
Still, the idea of AI generating a feature-length version of Homer’s classic before the year is over is certainly an ambitious claim. Whether Grok Imagine can actually pull it off is another question entirely, but if Musk follows through, it’ll be fascinating to see how audiences compare an AI-created Odyssey with Nolan’s big-screen vision.
