THE ODYSSEY Becomes Christopher Nolan's Biggest Global Opening Ever With a Massive $264 Million Debut
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey stormed into theaters this weekend and delivered the biggest global opening of Nolan's career, pulling in an incredible $264.1 million worldwide.
For a nearly three-hour, R-rated epic that's based on a poem written roughly 3,000 years ago, those numbers are pretty remarkable.
The film brought in $124.5 million domestically and another $139.6 million internationally, proving that audiences around the world were more than ready to experience Nolan's latest cinematic event.
After seeing the movie myself, none of this is surprising. The Odyssey is an incredible epic adventure that completely earns its place on the biggest screens possible. It's the kind of film that reminds you why going to the theater is such a special experience.
This isn't an original story, of course. Nolan adapted Homer's legendary epic, following Odysseus as he fights his way home after the Trojan War. But Nolan has taken one of history's oldest stories and transformed it into something that feels thrilling, emotional, and absolutely massive in scale.
The movie now stands as the biggest worldwide debut of Christopher Nolan's career, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises, which opened with $249 million globally, and The Dark Knight, which launched with $198 million.
It's also the third-biggest opening weekend of the year, trailing only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($372.5 million) and Toy Story 5 ($312 million).
Nolan wrote and directed the film, with Matt Damon leading the cast as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, whose dangerous voyage home becomes one of the greatest adventures ever told.
He's joined by an incredible ensemble that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.
The performances are fantastic across the board, but it's Nolan's filmmaking that pulls everything together into something unforgettable. Combined with outstanding reviews and glowing word-of-mouth from audiences, The Odyssey looks like it's going to enjoy a very healthy run in theaters.

One of the biggest reasons the movie feels so immersive is that it became the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX cameras. That technical achievement translated into massive premium format ticket sales as well.
The film earned $22.2 million internationally in IMAX, accounting for 16% of overseas revenue, while its global IMAX total reached $51.8 million, representing 23% of the worldwide box office. That gives IMAX its biggest opening in comparable markets, surpassing Avengers: Endgame.
Even more impressive, The Odyssey is currently running 47% ahead of Oppenheimer at the same point. Nolan's Oscar-winning drama launched with $35 million worldwide in IMAX before finishing its run with an outstanding $180 million in the premium format.
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond couldn't have been happier with the results, saying: "If you don’t see ‘The Odyssey’ in Imax, you aren’t seeing it in the way that Chris Nolan intended."
He went on to describe the weekend as a "transcendent moment" for IMAX and predicted that the success of The Odyssey will encourage "more Imax theaters opening and more audiences seeking out" the format.
After experiencing the film, it's hard to argue with that. The Odyssey is exactly the kind of movie that deserves the biggest screen and the best sound system you can find. Every battle, every sweeping landscape, every emotional moment, and every breathtaking sequence feels larger than life.
This opening weekend is another reminder that audiences will absolutely show up for original event filmmaking when it's done at this level.
Christopher Nolan has built enough trust with moviegoers that his name alone has become a reason to head to the theater, and The Odyssey rewards that trust with one of the most spectacular cinematic adventures in years.
