Emilio Estevez Wants to Make Three More YOUNG GUNS Movies and He's "Ready to Go"

The Young Guns Western film franchise brought together a who’s who cast of actors in the 80s. That ensemble cast included Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Jack Palance, Terence Stamp, and more. I enjoyed those movies when they came out, and Estevez is ready to revive the franchise! He believes that the franchise still has some gas in the tank.

During a recent interview with Uproxx, the actor said that he wants to make three more Young Guns movies and that he’s “ready to go.” He said:

"It all comes down to the legal minds that work out IP. Listen, I'm ready to go. We have a terrific draft and if we can figure out the copyrights on all of this, and if Morgan Creek can sort of untangle from some of the issues that they've got in terms of continuing the franchise, we're ready to go. So it's just a question of when. Of course, I'm not getting any younger, so I think we'll drop the 'young' from the title, which we've done. But I think that Westerns being revived certainly plays to our benefit."

The draft of the script that he’s talking about is for Guns 3: Alias Billy the Kid. Several years ago Estevez mentioned that a third movie was being developed, but there’s never been any reports of real movement on it. But, today we’ve learned there’s a script, so that’s a start!

The concept of the sequel revolved the theories that suggest William H. Bonney, aka Billy the Kid, survived his reported death in 1881. In the 1940s, there was one Texas man named Brushy Bill Roberts who claimed that he was Billy the Kid. Young Guns 2 even played with this theory. The actor went on to talk about the story he’d like to tell, saying:

"There's a new photo that surfaced. It's pretty strong evidence! There's a New York detective who is on the case, who's a facial recognition guy, and he looked at several, especially this new picture, and said, 'Without question, this is the same guy many years later and he is Brushy Bill...' And that, again, is just further evidence that there's a story there. It's almost like a 'Zelig' or 'Forrest Gump.' Brushy Bill Roberts, aka Billy the Kid, he fought alongside Pancho Villa in the Mexican Revolution. He was with Teddy Roosevelt at the Battle of San Juan Hill. Here's a guy that was born with the advent of the Gatling gun and died in 1950 during the Atomic Age. I mean, think about what he saw over the course of his lifetime!"

I’ve actually got a script for a Billy the Kid movie that would be awesome! I’m not sure if we’ll ever see any Young Guns sequels, but it would be interesting if one actually did happen.

The first film set in the 1870s and follows a group of six young men who are recruited by Englishman John Tunstall to work on his ranch. When Tunstall is murdered, the group sets out to avenge his death and becomes outlaws in the process. The film stars Estevez as Billy the Kid, Sutherland as Doc Scurlock, Sheen as Dick Brewer, Phillips as Chavez y Chavez, Dermot Mulroney as Dirty Steve Stephens, and Casey Siemaszko as Charley Bowdre.

Young Guns II is set in the 1880s and follows an older and more seasoned Billy the Kid as he tries to evade capture by Sheriff Pat Garrett. The film also features the return of some of the original cast members and introduces new characters, such as Christian Slater as Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh.
