FACE/OFF 2 Gets a Concerning Update From Nicolas Cage After Director Adam Wingard Exits

Fans have been waiting years to see Face/Off 2 finally come together, but according to Nicolas Cage, the sequel may be in a much shakier place than expected.

The long-gestating follow-up to Face/Off has already hit a major bump after Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard officially stepped away from the project earlier this year. Now Cage has offered an update, and it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that the movie is moving full speed ahead at Paramount Pictures.

During a recent interview with Variety, Cage was asked about the status of the sequel following Wingard’s departure. While the actor had nothing but good things to say about the filmmaker, he admitted he has absolutely no clue what’s happening with the project right now.

“Listen, Adam and I had a great lunch together at the Smoke House in Burbank, and we had a terrific conversation. We share similar interests. I like what he’s been doing with the Godzilla group, and we talked about one of our favorite supervillains in the old Godzilla movies, which was Hedorah.

“I’m sure at some point our paths will cross again. I don’t know what happened, and I have zero idea if it’s going to happen. I’m the last guy to know anything.”

If Cage is in the dark, maybe Paramount is still trying to figure out what this sequel is supposed to be. The studio first started developing Face/Off 2 back in 2019 with Spider-Noir showrunner Oren Uziel attached to write the screenplay.

Then in 2021, Paramount brought in Wingard and his longtime collaborator Simon Barrett to take over the project and shape a new direction for the sequel.

At the time, that pairing actually made a lot of sense. Wingard and Barrett have built a solid reputation for stylish genre filmmaking, and after Wingard tackled giant monsters with Godzilla vs. Kong, seeing him jump into the chaotic insanity of Face/Off felt like a cool fit.

Now that he’s gone, reports indicate the studio is hearing new pitches from filmmakers interested in taking over the sequel. That usually means things are back in the development blender, which can either lead to something exciting or keep a project trapped there for another decade.

The original Face/Off, directed by John Woo, hit theaters in 1997 and became one of the most gloriously over-the-top action thrillers of the era. The movie followed an FBI agent played by John Travolta who undergoes a surgical procedure to swap faces and identities with Cage’s terrorist mastermind Castor Troy.

The movie leaned all the way into its ridiculous premise and somehow made it work perfectly. Between Woo’s signature action style, doves flying everywhere, dual pistols, speedboats, prison magnets, and Cage operating at maximum Cage-energy, the film became an instant classic. It still holds a 93% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

At this point, it’s hard to tell whether Face/Off 2 is simply regrouping or slowly slipping into development limbo. Either way, Cage’s comments make it sound like fans probably shouldn’t expect cameras to start rolling anytime soon.
