Move Over Mobile Games: FALLOUT SHELTER Takes No Prisoners

Bethesda’s big reveal at its 2015 E3 press conference focused around the ultra-popular Fallout name, heralding the return of the series in Fallout 4: Welcome Home. The presentation included a highlight reel of features, game play, and all the hype a beloved game franchise deserves. The crowds moved on through the rest of E3 as the Internet lit up with reports and reviews. What happens after the information explosion has time to settle and you want something to tide you over until Fallout 4‘s release?

There's an app for that.

Raise a Nuka Cola to Fallout Shelter, Bethesda’s first foray into mobile gaming. Announced during the E3 conference and released later that night, it’s free to play with minimal focus on in-app purchases. (A refreshing change in mobile games, right?) In Fallout Shelter, you have been chosen by Vault-Tec to manage a vault full of Dwellers. You build rooms, place Dwellers, increase population, and protect your Dwellers while also exploring the wasteland beyond.

Antagonists include everything from raiders to radroaches; even concerns like radiation infection pop up if your water room isn’t working. Dwellers are placed in rooms according to their stats (the same SPECIAL stats used in Fallout games), matching task to stat bonus leads to higher productivity and resources from those rooms.

Raiders vs. Vault Dwellers - Who do you think will win?

Dwellers are gained by wanderers from the wasteland, and even by matching a male and female Dweller in a bunk to create a baby Dweller - which you then get to name. The more Dwellers you have, the more resources you have; the more resources you have, the happier your Dwellers are.

If you’re looking for a game that allows you casual access to the Fallout universe until Fallout 4‘s release, Fallout Shelter is available now at the Apple App Store, with Android release due in August.
