FAST & FURIOUS is Racing to TV With a New Peacock Series

The Fast & Furious franchise is officially shifting gears for television. Peacock has greenlit the first live-action TV series based on Universal’s massive action franchise, with the new show currently planned to premiere in 2028.

The move brings Fast & Furious to live-action television after 25 years on the big screen. It also comes as the movie series prepares to reach the finish line with its 11th and final installment, Fast Forever.

Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman will write the Peacock series and serve as co-showrunners. Vin Diesel, who has played Dominic Toretto since the original movie, will executive produce.

Diesel first revealed the project during NBCUniversal’s Upfront presentation in New York in May, where he explained why the franchise is finally making the jump to television.

“As you all know, we are very precious about these movies but over the last decade, we’ve realized that the fans have wanted more, they wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories, and for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space.”

According to Diesel, one of the major factors in embracing a Fast & Furious TV series was Universal Studios chief Donna Langley taking oversight of NBCUniversal’s television operations last year.

“That’s when I knew that the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family will be protected in the TV space.’ Because it’s all about family.

The series is being produced by Universal Television, with Daniels, Coleman and Diesel executive producing alongside One Race’s Sam Vincent, Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty, as well as Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan.

There’s plenty of experience involved here. Daniels recently served as an executive producer on Peacock’s PONIES and previously worked on Shades of Blue, Sons of Anarchy and NBC’s upcoming The Rockford Files reboot. Coleman executive produced 9-1-1: Lone Star and also worked on Shades of Blue.

This isn’t the only Fast & Furious television project being developed, either. Diesel revealed at the Upfront that three additional shows are in the works.

One comes from The Endgame’s Nick Wooton and House of the Dragon’s Charmaine DeGraté. The other two are being developed by Griselda showrunner Ingrid Escajeda and Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson.

No story details have been revealed for the newly greenlit Peacock series, so we don’t yet know whether it will follow any of the familiar characters, introduce a new crew or find another corner of the Fast & Furious world to explore.

NBCUniversal is currently celebrating the franchise’s 25th anniversary after The Fast and the Furious launched the whole thing in 2001 with Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz.

What started with street racing and DVD players eventually grew into one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises, and now Universal clearly sees plenty of road left beyond the movies.

Before the TV series arrives, audiences will get one more theatrical ride. Fast Forever is scheduled to hit theaters on March 17, 2028, serving as the 11th and final film in the main Fast & Furious saga.

Dominic Toretto’s theatrical saga may be approaching its finale, but Fast & Furious itself isn’t pulling into the garage anytime soon.
