Fede Alvarez Responds to Rumor of Ellen Ripley Returning for ALIEN: ROMULUS Sequel

Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez has responded to the recent reports that Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley is being considered for the sequel and that digital de-aging technology would be used to bring the character back to life as we knew her decades ago.

Alvarez shot the rumors down simpley responding to to the news on social media calling the report “Fun gossip. But not true at all.”

So there you have it folks! I honestly never expected to see Ripley return and as I previously said, I’d be fine if they moved on without her. The Alien franchise is set in a huge universe and there are so many other stories to tell.

Then there are the logistics of making it all work, since Alien: Romulus is set between Alien and Aliens, Ripley is canonically in stasis, drifting through space during this time. I’m not sure how they would’ve worked around that.

Anyway, Alvarez’s Romulus movie proves you don’t need Ripley to make the Aline franchise work.

As for the next film, Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are working on the script with the film expected to center on the two survivors of last year’s movie: Cailee Spaeny’s Rain and David Jonsson’s Andy.

Alvarez prerviously said: “I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before.”

It’ll be a while before we see this sequel get made, but I’m looking forward to watching whatever Alvarez and his creative team come up with.
