Sigourney Weaver Addresses Potential Return as Ripley in the ALIEN Franchise
With the release of Alien: Romulus, there’s been a lot of talk about the future of the franchise and if it means that one day we might see Sigourney Weever return as Ripley.
The actress recently addressed that possibility, saying: "I feel like she’s never far away from me, but on the other hand I have yet to read a script that said ‘you have got to do this.’
“So for me, she is in this other dimension, safe from the Alien for the time being. I don’t really think about it, but you know, it’s not completely impossible, and certainly a lot of good filmmakers are inspired by the material.”
Weaver went on to say: “How much does the public really need or want another Ripley movie? I don’t really sit around and think about it, but if it came up, I would consider it. It has come up a bunch of times, but I’m also busy doing other things. Ripley has earned her rest."
It’s nice that she’s willing to keep the door open if a script she likes actually does come along. There was a point several years ago when she was on board to play Ripley in director Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5, but that project ended up being shut down.
Fox decided to focus on Ridley Scott‘s vision of the franchise. Scott even said that Blomkamp's Alien 5 would "never see the light."
When previously talking about working with Blomkamp, Weaver said: “I can’t think of a better director. He’s a real fan. I think he’ll be true to the world and take it in unexpected directions. It’s got a lot of sinew in it. It will certainly stand up to the others and probably break a lot of new ground as well.”
Weaver and Michael Biehn were both going to reprise their roles in the film and James Cameron and Weaver both said that they loved the script that Blomkamp wrote.
We've already seen some really cool concept art from the film in the past, and every time I look at it, it’s a shame that this movie never happened.
The events of the film would have picked up after the events of James Cameron’s Aliens and ignored the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.
Would you want to see Weaver return to play Ripley again after all these years in a new Alien movie?
