First Teaser Trailer For A24’s BACKROOM Turns Viral Creepypasta Horror Into Big-Screen Terror
A24 just dropped the first teaser trailer for Backrooms, and it looks like the kind of unsettling sci-fi horror that will creep under your skin. The film brings the viral internet phenomenon to the big screen, with original creator Kane Parsons stepping up to direct his first feature.
If you’ve seen the YouTube series that started it all, you already know this concept hits different. Now it’s getting the full A24 treatment and a nationwide theatrical release this May.
Backrooms is based on the urban legend and creepypasta of the same name, which Parsons turned into a wildly popular web series on YouTube under the name Kane Pixels.
His original upload exploded online and reshaped how a new generation looks at lo-fi horror. The teaser even reminds us: “A film by Kane Parsons whose original upload redefined the landscape of horror for a new generation.”
The story centers on a series of disturbing home videos that document supernatural events tied to a strange doorway that appears in the basement of a furniture showroom. That doorway leads somewhere it definitely shouldn’t.
The teaser opens with the ominous warning: “You are not supposed to be here.” That simple line paired with the stark, minimal footage is incredibly effective. It doesn’t need jump scares or chaos. The mood alone does the heavy lifting.
The story follows a therapist whose patient vanishes into a dimension beyond reality. She makes the choice to go after him, stepping into the unknown in hopes of bringing him back. It’s a clean setup, but in the hands of Parsons and A24, it feels like it’s going to spiral into something deeply unnerving.
The film features an impressive cast led by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass, alongside Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia.
The screenplay was written by Will Soodik and Roberto Patino, with Patino also producing. The producing team also includes Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen, James Wan, Michael Clear, and Chris Ferguson.
The teaser leans into the analog horror vibe that made the original series so haunting. The grainy footage, the empty rooms, the oppressive silence. Then that voiceover slides in and suddenly you feel trapped in that fluorescent-lit maze. A very chilling teaser.
The movie is set to be released on May 29th, 2026.
