First Trailer for Sony's New Marvel Movie MADAME WEB

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for its upcoming Marvel Spider-Man spinoff movie Madame Web, and it looks like it will be expanding the Spider-Man universe in an interesting way. This is a very different kind of Spider-Man movie than we’ve seen, and the trailer puts a focus on explaining the villain of the story, Ezekiel Sims, who is a Spider-Man-like character who poses a threat to Madame Web and the three Spider-Women in the movie.

It’s not really clear why Ezekiel Sims is attacking the four women, but at one point he does mention that they need to die “because of what they become.” We then see brief flashes of the three future Spider-Women characters in costume. Like Madame Web, it seems Sims also has the ability to see into the future. I’m curious to see how this story plays out and what it teases for the future of the Spider-Man franchise.

The synopsis for the film reads: “In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures… if they can all survive a deadly present.”

Madame Web also stars Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Isabela Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight), and Emma Roberts (American Horror Story), along with Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps (The Upshaws), and Adam Scott (Severance).

Madame Web is being directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) from a screenplay written by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Madame Web was created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr. in 1980. Madame Web is a blind psychic who has become a major player in the world of Spider-Man due to her ties to “The Great Web,” a multiversal construct that ties all “Spider” characters together across the multiverse.

The movie will be released in theaters on February 14th. Watch the trailer and tell us what you think!
