FREE GUY Director Shawn Levy Says Sequel Is Being Reworked Because of the BARBIE Movie

Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy movie was a big success and a ton of fun to watch. With how successful the film was, of course, Disney wants a sequel. Well, that sequel has been in development, but director Shawn Levy says the movie is going to have to be reworked because of the Barbie movie.

Free Guy and Barbie do capture similar subject matter, and because of that Levy wants to make sure the the sequel is different from other movies. During an interview with Collider, Levy said:

“We love Free Guy and the love for Free Guy that has kind of resonated in aftershocks, if you will, in the last couple of years. That’s been thrilling to Ryan [Reynolds] and I. We are developing a sequel, but the truth is that you now have Barbie that has obviously left a mark about a character in a fictional world who comes to self-awareness. So, we’re only gonna make Free Guy 2 if it’s different than the first movie and if it’s different from other movies.”

There’s definitely a smart way to continue the Free Guy story if they really want to. I’m sure that they’ll come up with something. However, the movie doesn’t necessarily need a sequel. Even Reynolds once said that he doesn’t really want to make a sequel. He said:

“There is the potential to do a sequel to Free Guy, which would be fun. I would love it. But also like, does everything f**king have to be a sequel? I don’t know. Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home.

“So you know, there’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one,’ No, the first movie validates the first one and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”

He’s obviously interested in making a sequel now, but at this moment, they are just trying to crack the right story. If they do move forward with it, I hope that the story the come up with is unique.
