FRIDAY THE 13TH Prequel CRYSTAL LAKE Can Show Bloody Brutal Kills, but Nudity Apparently Crosses the Line
You can brutally murder people in all kinds of creative and disgusting ways, but showing a little nudity? Apparently, that's where things get complicated for the new Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake.
The Peacock horror series delivers plenty of gruesome kills, blood, and gore, but showrunner Brad Caleb Kane recently revealed that he wanted to include more nudity in the show and was ultimately overruled.
Speaking with The Wrap, Kane shared his frustration with the decision, saying: "I tried. That’s America. You can give the kids the violence, but God forbid they see some breasts. Sometimes you get overruled in these things."
It's a pretty funny restriction considering the franchise we're talking about. Sex, nudity, and horribly violent deaths have been part of Friday the 13th since the beginning.
With the exception of Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives, most of the movies have featured plenty of skin, usually right before someone meets a particularly bloody end.
Crystal Lake still has its share of sex scenes, including a few that might have you reaching for the remote if you're watching with kids in the house. But actual nudity is kept to a minimum, with little more than the occasional bare backside.
Kane didn't reveal who made the call to limit the nudity, but he clearly would've preferred to keep that familiar element of the franchise intact.
Of course, a lack of nudity isn't exactly going to ruin a Friday the 13th project. What horror fans really want to see is some creative carnage, and Crystal Lake certainly delivers on that front.
We're talking exploding blood bags, a deep-fried head, and plenty of other gruesome deaths that would make Jason Voorhees proud.
The series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees and explores her relationship with her son, Jason, along with the devastating grief she experiences after he's taken from her in a freak accident. That grief eventually gives way to a violent desire for revenge, sending Pamela down a pretty disturbing path.
Kane also spoke with GamesRadar+ about how he comes up with the show's elaborate kills, explaining: "I just have a deep bench of kills in my head… at the end of the day the creative process is very mysterious.
“You sit down, and you go, 'How do we top the kills in the movies? How do we connect them to character and emotion? What will make the kills hit the hardest?' And that's kind of how you conceive them."
It's not just about finding increasingly gruesome ways to kill people. Kane wants those deaths to mean something within the story, which makes Pamela's descent into violence all the more interesting.
Cardellini also shared which bloody moment was the most intense for her to film, saying: "The first scene where you see me covered in blood, that was really for me personally, was my goriest."
Kane already has more gruesome death ideas ready for a potential second season of Crystal Lake, so there's certainly no shortage of creative violence waiting to be unleashed if Peacock decides to bring the series back.
It's amusing that a show can get away with practically turning people into hamburger meat while a little bit of nudity is apparently a step too far.
Regardless, Crystal Lake seems perfectly happy to keep the blood flowing, even if the clothes mostly stay on.
Crystal Lake is now streaming on Peacock.
