FROZEN 3 Teases Anna’s Wedding, a Mysterious Villain, and a Wild New Frozen Realm

Anna and Kristoff are getting married, Elsa is poking around mysterious magical objects again, and somewhere beyond Arendelle, a sinister new figure is waiting for them. Frozen 3 sounds like it’s sending Disney’s ice-powered franchise into some pretty wild territory.

Disney offered fans inside an early look at the next chapter during its D23 entertainment showcase Friday night, and while plenty of secrets remain under wraps, the footage revealed some major developments for Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and the rest of the gang.

Kristen Bell confirmed that Anna will officially marry her beloved “mountain man” Kristoff, once again voiced by Jonathan Groff. It’s a big moment for the couple after everything they’ve been through across the first two movies, and naturally, Elsa will be there for her sister.

But this wouldn’t be Frozen if a happy celebration didn’t come with a potentially kingdom-threatening magical problem.

Idina Menzel joined Bell at the presentation and explained that the world of Frozen has gotten “a little bit more mysterious” since we last visited Arendelle. That mystery will pull the characters far beyond the familiar kingdom as they encounter a new threat and an unexplored frozen realm.

The footage shown exclusively to everyone in the room begins with Anna and Kristoff on their wedding night when they discover Elsa out on a dock examining a strange stone. Whatever this object is, it appears capable of opening a portal into another snow-covered dimension.

Menzel described the place as “a frozen land more wild and dangerous than anything Elsa has ever created.” Considering Elsa can whip up massive ice palaces, unleash enormous snowstorms, and accidentally plunge an entire kingdom into winter, describing someplace as more dangerous than anything she has created sets a pretty high bar.

The trio eventually ventures through what looks like a portal, where they encounter someone who definitely doesn’t seem interested in giving them a friendly tour.

Disney kept the character’s identity hidden by withholding a clear look at her face, but the mysterious newcomer appears to be a woman sporting short black hair and a wicked-looking cape. Whether she’s the primary villain of Frozen 3, someone connected to Elsa’s magic, or part of a much bigger mystery remains unknown.

The presentation also included new music performed by the film’s leading ladies, and of course, you can’t bring Frozen back without everyone’s favorite talking snowman.

Josh Gad joined Bell and Menzel onstage for a song centered on Olaf’s one true love, Samantha. I’m sure you all remember Olaf wandering around Frozen 2 yelling “Samantha?” despite having absolutely no idea who Samantha is.

The new footage also adds some context to concept art Disney revealed at D23 a couple of years ago. At the time, filmmaker Jennifer Lee teased that the unanswered mysteries left by Frozen 2 were bigger than a single sequel could handle. “There were a lot of questions coming out of Frozen 2 … It will take two films to answer them.”

That concept artwork showed Elsa and Anna separately riding toward a distant white palace set against a surprisingly summery horizon. Olaf could be seen hitching a ride on Anna’s horse, while Elsa was traveling aboard the water spirit Nokk.

More interestingly, a strange horned shadow figure lurked in the river behind them. The imagery suggested the sisters would travel beyond Arendelle and the Enchanted Forest into an entirely new mystical realm.

Their destination appeared to be a floating palace, prompting plenty of speculation that the location could hold answers about Elsa’s powers and their true origins.

Now that we know a mysterious stone seemingly opens the doorway to an extremely dangerous frozen dimension, some of those earlier pieces are beginning to come together.

If answering the mysteries of Frozen 2 requires two movies, Frozen 3 may only reveal part of what Disney has planned for Elsa and Anna. The sequel that is coming together could incorporate pieces of a story stretching beyond this third installment.

At least Anna and Kristoff are getting their wedding before everything inevitably goes sideways.

Frozen 3 will hit theaters on November 24, 2027.
