VIOLENT NIGHT 2 Trailer Brings Back David Harbour's Killer Santa and Introduces Kristen Bell's Badass Mrs. Claus
If you thought Santa Claus handled business on his own, Violent Night 2 is about to prove otherwise. The first trailer for the sequel has arrived, and while it's great to see David Harbour slipping back into the blood-soaked red suit, the biggest surprise is the arrival of Kristen Bell as a fierce, sword-and-hammer-wielding Mrs. Claus. It looks like Saint Nick isn't the only member of the family with a talent for taking down bad guys.
Harbour took a sharp turn away from Stranger Things when he started chasing leading-man roles on the big screen. While projects like the 2019 Hellboy reboot failed to connect with audiences, he found the perfect fit with 2022's Violent Night, a gleefully over-the-top mash-up of Santa Claus and Die Hard.
Made for just $20 million, Violent Night went on to pull in $76 million worldwide and has steadily earned a reputation as a holiday favorite for fans who prefer their Christmas movies with shattered bones, gunfire, and gallons of fake blood.
Now director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) is back for another round of festive mayhem, with returning writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller once again crafting Santa's next violent adventure.
This time around, Santa faces a new threat when ruthless gangster Jared Harris sets his sights on the merchants of the Silver Bell Mall. Unfortunately, Santa finds himself struggling with something far more dangerous than armed criminals. He's lost sight of what Christmas is supposed to mean.
The official synopsis explains: “In 2022’s bare-knuckle holiday sensation, Violent Night, an embittered Santa, armed with lethal combat skills, took out a team of mercenaries to rescue a girl and her family. Now, not-so-jolly Saint Nick suits up again to take on a ruthless gangster (Jared Harris) terrorizing the merchants of the Silver Bell Mall.
But when Santa forgets the true meaning of Christmas, he finds himself in the heart of a lively mall community in desperate need of his help. Sapped of his magic, he’ll need another way to take on the goons threatening the mall, and time is running out. Santa has to rediscover his faith in goodness and call in some last-minute reinforcements from the one person no baddie wants to tangle with: Mrs. Claus (Kristen Bell).”
That last part is what really makes this sequel stand out. Bell's version of Mrs. Claus isn't sitting back at the North Pole baking cookies. She's charging into battle armed with medieval-style weapons, and judging by the trailer, she's every bit as dangerous as Santa himself.
It's a fun twist that expands the world established in the first movie and opens the door to seeing what Christmas legends look like when they're pushed into full action-hero mode.
If the sequel delivers the same mix of outrageous action, dark comedy, and holiday spirit that made the original such an entertaining surprise, Violent Night 2 could easily earn another spot in fans' annual Christmas movie rotation.
Violent Night 2 hits theaters on December 4th.
