GAME OF THRONES Actor Conleth Hill Explains He Was "Frustrated" With The Show’s "Rushed" Final Season
The fans of Game of Thrones weren’t the only ones who were frustrated with the final season of the series. That last season felt so rushed it was ridiculous, and the quality of the series and storytelling suffered for it. Series actor Conleth Hill also wasn’t happy with the final season of the show, and he shared in a recent interview with The Times UK his feelings about how the show ended and that he was “inconsolable” when he found out his character, Varys, was being killed off.
Varys was burned to death by a dragon in the final season’s final episode. But, by that point, Hill admitted, he had grown “frustrated” with the series for not staying true to his character. He explained:
“I thought I’d done something wrong. Right up until the last two series, I had no complaints at all. I just felt frustrated with the last couple of series because Varys wasn’t the all-knowing character he had been. I think the writers wanted to do one thing to end it and the studio HBO wanted to do another. I felt that last series was a bit rushed. I was inconsolable, but now I’m fine about it.”
A lot of people feel the same way about the show. Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin previously said that he started to really worry about the epic fantasy series after Season 5. Martin's representative, Paul Haas, shared that when showrunners and writers Dan Weiss and Dave Benioff stopped following Martin’s story outline, Martin started to get concerned.
"George loves Dan and Dave, but after Season 5 he did start to worry about the path they were [going down] because George knows where the story goes. He started saying, 'You're not following my template.' The first 5 seasons stuck to George's roadmap. Then they went off George's roadmap."
It’s so crazy to me how the showrunners let the show go to crap with that last season. But, what’s done is done. We just all know that the show could’ve had a great and strong conclusion with the right guidance.
