George R.R. Martin’s Publisher Shuts Down Latest WINDS OF WINTER Rumors
If you’ve been keeping an eye on the internet lately, you’ve probably seen the latest swirl of rumors claiming that The Winds of Winter is finally locked, loaded, and ready for a big reveal.
According to a supposed insider, the long-awaited next chapter in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga was allegedly finished in 2025 and gearing up for a fall release. Sounds exciting, right? Well, not so fast.
A representative for Bantam Books has stepped in to shut that down. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, they made it crystal clear: “The online chatter you are seeing regarding a supposed leak is false.”
That statement directly counters a detailed anonymous post that made the rounds online. The post claimed everything from a completed manuscript to a planned announcement at Comic-Con, with the added tease that George R. R. Martin might break the news first on his blog.
It was the kind of rumor that fans want to believe, especially after years of waiting, but it looks like this one doesn’t hold up.
Still, the excitement around The Winds of Winter isn’t coming out of nowhere. Martin himself has been open about where things stand, even if the updates haven’t always been what fans hoped for.
In an earlier interview, he admitted that while he wants to prioritize finishing the book, he hasn’t exactly been “in the mood” to dive into it lately. Instead, he’s been juggling other projects, checking off tasks before fully committing to wrapping up the novel.
That doesn’t mean the book is sitting untouched. Martin has talked about revisiting chapters, rewriting sections that don’t meet his standards, and stepping away when frustration hits.
It’s a process that clearly takes time, especially for a story this massive, and if you were wondering whether someone else might step in to finish it, Martin isn’t into that idea at all. He’s made it known he would “hate” that outcome.
He also addressed the delays head-on during New York Comic Con 2025, offering a bit of perspective on why the book has taken so long.
“I know there’s all this controversy about Winds of Winter and how late it is, but I’ve always had trouble with deadlines, and I don’t feel happy breaching contracts or missing a deadline or anything like that.”
At this point, the reality is pretty simple. There’s no confirmed release date, no secret finished manuscript waiting in the wings, and no imminent Comic-Con reveal. What we do have is an author who’s still working through the story at his own pace, trying to get it right.
