GHOST OF TSUSHIMA Anime Pushed to 2028 as Original Game Actor Joins the Cast
Fans hoping to return to the world of Ghost of Tsushima in anime form are going to have to wait a little longer. Crunchyroll has confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima Legends won't arrive until 2028, pushing the highly anticipated adaptation back from its original 2027 release window.
The disappointing news came during New York Comic Con, but at least there's something cool to go along with the delay. Two new voice actors have joined the project, including a familiar name from the original PlayStation game.
Mayumi Saco, who voiced the villainous Tomoe in the Japanese version of Ghost of Tsushima, is officially returning to the franchise. She'll be joined by Shinya Fukumatsu, although neither actor's role in the upcoming anime has been revealed.
It's great to see some talent from the original game involved, especially since the anime is taking a different approach to the world created by Sucker Punch Productions.
Released in 2020, Ghost of Tsushima follows samurai Jin Sakai as he fights to reclaim the Japanese island of Tsushima during the Mongol invasion. The open-world action adventure became a massive hit thanks to its gorgeous environments, brutal sword combat, and compelling story.
The franchise later expanded with Ghost of Yotei, which introduced a new protagonist named Atsu, a sword-wielding warrior hunting down the Yotei Six after they murdered her parents.
Rather than simply retelling Jin Sakai's story, the upcoming anime draws inspiration from the game's multiplayer Legends mode, which embraces supernatural elements and creatures inspired by Japanese mythology. That should give the creative team plenty of room to explore a more fantastical side of the franchise.
The anime was originally announced in January 2025, and updates have been pretty scarce ever since. Considering how little we've seen of the project, the move to 2028 isn't entirely surprising.
When the series was first revealed, Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini shared his enthusiasm for the adaptation, saying:
"The Ghost of Tsushima anime will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking,"
PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash also explained why the franchise is such a natural fit for anime:
"Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series."
The series is being directed by Takanobu Mizuno, whose credits include Star Wars: Visions. With Aniplex involved and a director experienced in bringing Japanese animation to major franchises, there's plenty of potential for something awesome here.
It's frustrating that Ghost of Tsushima Legends is now two years away, but I'd much rather see the creative team take the time needed to deliver a great anime than rush something out just to hit a release date.
If the series can capture the incredible sword fights, striking visuals, and supernatural mythology of Legends mode, this could be one hell of an anime adaptation.
