Glen Powell Says He Will Not Replace Tom Cruise in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: "My Mom Would Never Let Me Do That"
Earlier this week, fans were delighted by the exhilarating first trailer for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, the final film in Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible movie franchise.
Just with this franchise alone, Cruise has made an incredible legacy for himself as he and filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie pushed the boundaries of stunts with each installment, and Cruise took on some of the biggest stunts in the film industry.
Once fans saw the trailer and it felt certain that this would be the final sequel for Cruise, some speculated that Glen Powell could be the perfect actor to step into the role and fill Cruise’s shoes.
The pair previously worked together on Top Gun: Maverick, and Powell has been vocal about his admiration for Cruise and his career. But it sounds like we can settle that rumor right now, as Powell is not looking to become the next Ethan Hunt, or at least his mom wouldn’t be happy with the decision.
Speaking to ESPN’s Pat McAfee (via ComicBook) Powell was asked about the idea of following Cruise into Mission: Impossible. He said, “My mom would never let me do that. That’s the worst gig in town, everybody knows that. That’s a death trap.”
From a mom’s perspective, I totally get it!
There aren’t any plans for Powell to join or replace Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise, but they have plenty of work to do on the upcoming Top Gun 3. Powell recently teased that though the stars and studio have been slow-rolling the hype on the project, it does have a start date. He wouldn’t reveal what that was, but it sounds like it’s moving forward pretty steadily.
Powell will be back to play the character Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin once again, starring alongside Cruise and fellow Maverick alum Miles Teller.
