GODZILLA MINUS ONE Director Takashi Yamazaki Casts Paul Giamatti and More in GRANDGEAR
After delivering one of the best Godzilla movies in years with Godzilla Minus One, director Takashi Yamazaki is making his move into Hollywood, and he’s bringing some strong talent along for the ride.
Yamazaki’s first English-language film, Grandgear, has found its two leads in Sam Nivola and Nico Parker, with Paul Giamatti currently in negotiations to join the cast. The project also has J.J. Abrams producing through Bad Robot alongside Glen Zipper, making this an interesting collaboration worth keeping an eye on.
Yamazaki wrote the original screenplay and will direct the film, though story details are being kept secret. We do know that it’s a mecha‑versus‑kaiju sci‑fi action film, and I saw some teaser footage at CinemaCon and it looks awesome! Production is expected to begin sometime in 2027, and we do
Giamatti was reportedly the filmmakers’ top choice for his role. Hopefully, the deal comes together because he’s the kind of actor who can make just about any project more interesting.
Finding the film’s younger leads was a more involved process. Yamazaki reportedly put actors through extensive chemistry tests before choosing Nivola and Parker, suggesting that the relationship between their characters will be an important part of the story.
Nivola has earned praise for his work in The White Lotus and has appeared in films such as White Noise and Maestro. He also appears opposite Connie Britton in Hulu’s Phony.
Parker has also been building an impressive career. She won the Breakthrough Performance Award at Sundance for Suncoast, earned a BAFTA nomination for her performance in HBO’s The Last of Us, and starred as the female lead in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon.
Of course, the biggest reason to be excited about Grandgear is Yamazaki himself. The filmmaker wrote, directed, and supervised the visual effects for Godzilla Minus One, delivering an incredible monster movie that combined massive destruction with a genuinely compelling human story.
His work also earned him an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, making him the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win that Oscar. That's a pretty awesome accomplishment, especially considering what Yamazaki achieved with the film's comparatively modest budget.
He's also returning to the monster franchise with Godzilla Minus Zero, which recently premiered at the New York Film Festival. The sequel is scheduled to hit IMAX theaters on November 3 before expanding nationwide on November 6.
With another Godzilla movie on the way and Grandgear coming together, Yamazaki has a lot going on. I'm especially curious to see what he does with this Grandgear movie. Yamazaki has already proven that he knows how to deliver an incredible cinematic experience without losing sight of the characters.
Whatever he's cooking up for this next project, I'm excited to see it!
