GODZILLA MINUS ONE Director Takashi Yamazaki Wants To Make a STAR WARS Movie
Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki made one hell of a great Godzilla movie! As a long-time fan of Godzilla, that was an awesome movie! The filmmaker has worked on several films throughout his career including Space Battleship Yamato, Parasyte, Lupin III: The First, Ghost Book, and more.
The director has now set his sights on Star Wars. He wants to play in that sandbox! During an interview with /Film, Yamazaki was asked what kind of film he’d like to make next, and he said:
"I watched Star Wars, and that's how I ended up being a filmmaker. I'm really hoping I will get a call and they will bring me on Star Wars."
I get that it’s a dream for a lot of filmmakers to want to make a Star Wars movie, and if Lucasfilm had any sense they would give Yamazaki a call and let him at least pitch them a Star Wars movie. But, as you know, Lucasfilm isn’t in the strongest place right now when it comes to producing Star Wars movies. Over the past several years filmmakers and their Star Wars projects have come and gone. A lot of these projects are just sitting in limbo right now. A few are actually moving forward, but who knows when the next Star Wars movie will be released.
So, while I believe that Yamazaki could make an awesome and unique Star Wars movie, even if Lucasfilm brought him in to make one, who knows if it would ever even get made. Because of that, I think the director should take Zack Snyder’s approach and just make his own Star Was-inspired project. He should just take whatever ideas he has for a Star Wars movie and turn it into an original story and pitch it to the studios and streaming services.
After what he delivered with Godzilla Minus One, I’m sure some production company out there would want to work with him on a sci-fi space opera!
