GODZILLA x KONG: SUPERNOVA Test Screening Reveals SpaceGodzilla, Massive Threat Tease, and Major MonsterVerse Shake-Up
A test screening for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova went down last Saturday, and as expected, details have already clawed their way online. While we don’t have a full plot rundown, we do have some interesting story info about the villain, surprise absences, returning Titans, and how this next chapter in the MonsterVerse actually plays out.
If you’ve been wondering where the franchise heads after Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, this new report gives us a much clearer picture. And it sounds like the MonsterVerse is swinging big.
The headline reveal is that SpaceGodzilla is officially the main villain of Supernova.
For those who remember the 1994 Toho film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, the character is a mutated clone of Godzilla. In that version, Godzilla’s cells drifted into space, were pulled into a black hole, fused with crystalline alien organisms, and came back as a twisted cosmic reflection of the King of the Monsters.
He resembles Godzilla but sports massive crystalline shoulder spikes instead of dorsal fins, a reddish-purple abdominal glow, tusks, and that piercing, high-pitched roar.
According to the screening report, this version of SpaceGodzilla is “pretty recognizable to the original design,” which is good news for longtime fans.
But here’s where things get interesting.
While SpaceGodzilla is the primary antagonist, he isn’t the top of the food chain. The report states that SpaceGodzilla is created by a greater threat, which is teased at the end of the film.
Despite that, SpaceGodzilla still has his own free will and is not controlled by it. So we’re potentially looking at a cosmic puppet master setting up the next phase of the MonsterVerse.
And if the early reactions are accurate, SpaceGodzilla is no joke. He’s reportedly the most powerful titan in the MonsterVerse shown so far, and keeps Godzilla and Kong on the back foot for most of their fights.
Speaking of our two alpha Titans, there’s good news for anyone tired of the rivalry angle. Godzilla and Kong are on good terms this time around. There’s no rematch, no alpha chest-beating showdown. They’re allies from the jump.
Godzilla is the main focus of the film and has the most screen time, though Kong still gets more screen time here than Godzilla did in The New Empire. Even better, Godzilla’s personality is said to be closer to Godzilla (2014) and King of the Monsters instead of the rage-driven version we saw in Godzilla vs. Kong and The New Empire.
He’s still rocking the evolved design introduced previously, though the CGI shown in the test screening wasn’t fully complete and could be slightly adjusted before release.
Now for the monster roll call.
Mothra and Rodan are reportedly not appearing in the film, and none of the King of the Monsters Titans are involved either. There’s also no baby Godzilla. So if you were hoping for a Son of Godzilla twist, that isn’t happening here.
Suko and Shimo do appear, though Shimo is only in the movie for a few minutes. There’s also a rumor that Kong gets an exo suit. If you’ve seen how far this franchise has leaned into wild sci-fi concepts lately, who knows?
Tone-wise, Supernova is said to feel similar to The New Empire, but with much stronger human writing. That’s been one of the biggest criticisms of recent MonsterVerse entries, so it sounds like the creative team took that to heart.
That team includes director Grant Sputore, who previously helmed I Am Mother, and writer Dave Callaham, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The cast is packed with talent, including Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, and Dan Stevens, who returns as Trapper Beasley from The New Empire.
Early reactions from the screening are mostly positive, though there were some mixed responses as well. That’s pretty typical for a test screening, especially when visual effects are unfinished and story elements are still being fine-tuned.
If these details hold, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova could end up being the most cosmic and high-stakes entry in the franchise yet.
The film hits theaters on March 26, 2027. Start the countdown.
