Godzilla’s 71st Anniversary Celebrated With Awesome Stop-Motion Tribute From Toho

The King of the Monsters has been stomping across screens for more than seven decades, and the celebration for his latest milestone is a lot more playful than you might expect.

To mark the kaiju icon’s 71st anniversary, Toho released a clever stop-motion tribute video that looks back at Godzilla’s legacy using collectible figures and some hilarious miniature chaos.

The video arrives at a time when Godzilla is once again dominating the entertainment landscape. Between streaming shows, upcoming films, and fresh monsters entering the mix, the legendary creature is still as relevant as ever. And this tribute is a fun reminder of just how far the franchise has come.

Instead of leaning into the darker tone many of the films embrace, the anniversary video takes a more comedic route. Toho assembled a variety of figures representing Godzilla and other famous kaiju and brought them to life in stop-motion form. The result is a fun lighthearted montage of monster mayhem that fans will immediately appreciate.

The short film was directed by Cressa Maeve Aine, who has an impressive résumé working in the production department on massive Hollywood titles like The Dark Knight Rises, Men in Black 3, The Avengers, and Captain America: The First Avenger.

The tribute also arrives during a very active moment for the franchise. On the streaming side, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters recently kicked off its second season on Apple TV+. The series has already jumped into new territory for Legendary’s Monsterverse. While Monarch continues dealing with Kong’s presence on Skull Island, the show has introduced a mysterious new titan called “Titan X.”

The creature has drawn comparisons to Biollante, the classic Toho kaiju that blended Godzilla’s DNA with plant life. Titan X mostly lurks in the ocean depths, while releasing swarms of smaller creatures that are giving Monarch serious problems. It’s a great addition to the Monsterverse and could hint at bigger threats on the horizon.

That horizon includes the next major Monsterverse movie, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which is scheduled to arrive in 2027. With Monarch continuing to expand the world and introduce new titans, it’s easy to imagine the series laying groundwork for the next massive cinematic showdown.

Meanwhile, Japan is preparing to bring the King of the Monsters back to theaters as well. A sequel to Godzilla Minus One is currently in development with Takashi Yamazaki returning to direct. The original film was widely praised and is often considered one of the best entries in the entire franchise.

Details on the follow-up are still under wraps. The first film focused entirely on Godzilla battling humanity, so fans are wondering if the sequel might introduce another classic kaiju to face off against him.

Interestingly, Yamazaki recently worked on an amusement park attraction in Japan that featured his version of King Ghidorah. That three-headed dragon has a long history with Godzilla and would be a pretty exciting opponent if he makes the jump into the next film.

For now, though, Toho’s stop-motion tribute is a fun reminder of why Godzilla remains such an enduring icon. After 71 years, the giant lizard still inspires filmmakers, storytellers, and fans around the world.
