Grand Admiral Thrawn's Grand Twisted Plan Was Revealed in The STAR WARS: AHSOKA Season Finale
The end of Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 1 saw Ahsoka, Ezra, and Sabine's attempt to stop Grand Admiral Thrawn. But, despite their best efforts, Thrawn ended up escaping and his final taunting words in the episode were “Long live the Empire.” The villain is going to make his attempt to re-establish Imperial rule.
He ends up traveling to their homeworld of Dathomir, and from there, we get a tease of what Thrawn’s ultimate sinister plan is to resurrect the Empire. The end of the episode showed us the cargo hold of Thrawn's Star Destroyer, the Chimaera, and it was filled with coffins, and all those coffins have bodies in them. These are likely Dathomirian bodies.
These deceased people are being set up to become Thrawn’s new Imperial army. An imperial army of the dead, which means Star Wars is about to go full zombie, and I freakin’ love that! It seems very clear to me that this army will be raised from the dead by the Great Mothers, just like they awesomely did with the Night Troopers. Star Wars is going to introduce a full army of the undead! So badass.
As of right now, we have no idea when Thrawn’s grant twisted plan is going to be put into action. Will we have to wait until Ahsoka Season 2? Will the story continue to play out in The Mandalorian Season 4? We’ll just have to wait and see.
One thing we do know is that Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew are all set in the same time period and everything is leading to the big Star Wars movie that Dave Filoni is set to direct, which is sure to see the New Republic battling Thrawn's zombie Empire. Things are about to get really awesome!
Thrawn actor Lars Mikkelsen previously talked about what makes Thrawn such an interesting villain, and that his mind is what makes him a formidable foe for Ahsoka and the other characters:
"That bloke, he doesn't have the force. He's not a Jedi, he's not a superhero of any kind, but he has the brain. He has all of that in that regard. How does he stack up against characters like Ahsoka, Sabine, and all these other people we're going to see and possibly antagonize in the live-action series? I think, I mean, what I mean, his superpower is his mind, which is really and always like seven paces ahead of everybody. And I'm in that sense also ahead of you as an audience, I think. So that's what you expect."
Writer, director, and producer Dave Filoni also talked about Thrawn, explaining what sets him apart from the iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader, comparing him to the Sherlock Holmes character, Moriarty:
"The genius of Thrawn is that he's not Darth Vader. He doesn't even try to be. He doesn't have the Force. But he's smart and he's calculating. He's like a Moriarty, he's going to outthink you and out chess move you, so those are the things that I really liked."
