Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead, Creepshow) was pulled in to work on helping bring Todd McFarlane's new Spawn movie project to life. He and his team have done a lot of design work for the project, which is planned to be a hard R supernatural thriller.

During a recent interview with CB, Nicotero opened up a little bit about his work on the film and what McFarlane was looking for in the design work. He describes the film as “Spawn meets David Fincher” and says that it is going to be a “gritty” and “dirty thing”:

"We have designs ... [McFarlane] came in, and he said, 'Look, we're doing this thing, and it's going to be low budget, and it's kind of down and dirty. And I want it to feel more like the animated show [Todd McFarlane's Spawn], where it's like Spawn meets David Fincher. He wanted to do this kind of gritty down and dirty thing. And so, we did a lot of concept work here. We did a bunch of design busts and a lot of really, really cool stuff. And then it kind of stalled."

McFarlane has been very passionate about this project. He’s been working on it for years and he partnered up with Blumhouse to make it happen. These days it doesn’t seem like there’s much movement on the project. Nicotero went on to say:

"Every once in a while, I'll reach out and go, 'Hey.’ I'll look at the busts in my office and be like, 'Hey, Todd, what's going on with this? Are we ever going to make this?' Because I'm really in love with the design work we did.

"Look, I hope it will happen. I know he's very passionate about it. And look, if you really think about Spawn, Todd McFarland was way ahead of his time, man, way out of his time in terms of what he did with that character. I really do feel that there's a world where there's a great Spawn movie out there."

I think there’s a great Spawn movie out there as well! The question is… will it actually ever get made!? Producer Jason Blum offered an update on the project several months ago saying that they're still actively pursuing the project, and they are taking their time to get the script right:

"What excited me about it is that Spawn is kind of the last great unexploited comic. So that seemed like an amazing opportunity. It’s taken longer than I hoped it would have to get the story right, but we’re still working on it."

Blum then promised that the reboot is “gonna be very different, it’s gonna be very edgy." Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner are attached to star in the film as Spawn and Twitch, and when talking about his take on the story, McFarlane previously explained:

"There's two big roles in the script. There's obviously sort of Spawn himself, although in a weird way it's not the biggest role, and then there's the cop. The cop is this character Twitch who's been there since issue #1. Twitch is the role in this one, and I sort of refer to him as my sheriff Brody, who is the sheriff in the Jaws movie. Although it was called Jaws, Jaws didn't really talk a lot in his movie, right? He just kind of showed up at the opportune time to make the movie worthwhile."

I hope the film actually gets made, but I honestly don’t know if it will ever happen!
