GROUNDHOG DAY Musical Officially Coming to Broadway in 2017

Prepare to get tired of hearing Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" all over again, Broadway fans: a Groundhog Day musical is heading to New York City in 2017.

Variety reports that the creators of Matilda, another film-to-stage adaptation, are turning their attention to the 1993 Bill Murray classic and teaming with the film's co-writer Danny Rubin to bring the story to theater fans. The official premiere date will be on March 9th, 2017, and previews begin on January 23rd, 2017, so they have just under two years to pull everything together and make it happen.

Casting hasn't begun yet, but whoever is going to play the lead role certainly has some massive shoes to fill. Murray's performance in the movie is nothing short of brilliant, and his Broadway counterpart will have the added pressure of incorporating songs into his performance. I wonder if they'll end up casting someone who's already famous, or going with an unknown?

If you haven't seen this insane Groundhog Day remix, it's worth checking out solely for the insane amount of time it must have taken to put together.
