GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 is "Not About Saving The Universe – It’s About The Guardians Saving Themselves"
While we patiently wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, director James Gunn, Chris Pratt, and franchise newcomer Will Poulter are talking about the film and sharing details on the story and characters in a recent interview with Empire.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is going to be the final film in the franchise, and from all the footage that’s been released so far, it looks like this is going to take fans on an incredibly adventurous and emotional journey. Gunn has teased deaths in this movie, but he could be lying!
Anyway, in this recent interview, Gunn explains that this next chapter of the story is “not about saving the universe – it’s about the Guardians saving themselves.”
As you know, the Guardians team has done their fair share of helping save the universe and they’ve found themselves in some crazy and dangerous situations, but this movie is going to be a little different. This story is going to put a focus on Rocket Raccoon and it will fill us in on his tragic history with the villainous High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), a mad scientist who presides over “Counter-Earth,” where he creates hybrid creatures. When talking about this character, Gunn said:
“The High Evolutionary is one of my favourite Marvel villains. I’ve always been a big fan of [1932 film] Island Of Lost Souls. He’s like a space Doctor Moreau. He’s a detestable character, frankly.”
It’s explained that “The High Evolutionary also heralds the arrival of anthropomorphic otter Lylla, the much-anticipated debut proper of Cosmo The Space Dog (voiced by Borat 2’s Maria Bakalova) and introduction of Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock.” Warlock is being played by Poulter, and when talking about bringing this character to life, the actor said:
“James and I discussed the idea of playing him, at least in this initial phase, in his infancy. As a young person entering the world, trying to develop his moral compass. There was a lot of comedy in that, but also some genuine pathos, some dramatic meat on the bone.”
When previously talking about Adam Warlock, Gunn described him as a villainous baby, saying: “It’s kind of more complicated than that, but he’s definitely not a good guy. What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.”
As for Star-Lord, Pratt explains that he’s found himself in a “state of depression” and his team will need to help save him. As you know, the character has been through some heavy and emotional experiences. The actor added:
“He’s living in a world where Gamora has no idea who he is. The love of his life is gone. That has caused him to drink a lot. He’s not the best leader.”
When talking about the overall arc of the trilogy, Gunn explains what the big picture is, saying: “The first movie is about the mother, the second movie is about the father and the third movie is about the self. That is the overall story.”
