HALO Showrunner Says The Series Version of Master Chief is Not Comparable To The Game Version
The more that the creative team behind the Halo series talks about the project, the more I start to worry about it. I was actually very excited about the show at first, but in their explanations as to why Master Chief will be showing his face, Cortana’s character design, and not looking at or talking about the game while developing the series, my excitement has faded because they are saying things that the fans don’t want to hear or know about.
Now, in a recent interview with GamesRadar, showrunner Steven Kane opens up about Pablo Schreiber’s version of Master Chief and how he compares to the iconic video game version of the character. Basically, he says you can’t really compare them:
"I don’t think there’s really a comparison. I think that, in many ways, when you play the game as a first person player, you have your own vision of who John is. You might think of yourself as John, because it's your first person.
"This was a way of taking the John that everyone knows from the game or other novels, in terms of everyone kind of knows who he is, and putting our take on it and sort of letting the audience get to know John, as John gets to know himself. I wouldn’t compare the two… Let his journey to self-understanding take us along for the ride and enjoy it with him."
Halo series executive producer and head of transmedia at developer 343 Industries, Kiki Wolfkill adds: "This is one of 10 million Chief stories out there, because we all have our own story. And so this is hopefully a place where people can take the Chief that they have in their heads, and really sit back and let us tell the story and take you on this journey, and recognize this as another version of Chief."
So again, this is just another explanation of the fact that they didn’t really care to look at the source material while making the series and that just seems worrisome. I hope I’m wrong and I hope that when I watch the series it actually turns out to be great! But, that’s not the reaction I’m seeing from a lot of reviews, so we’ll see.
Halo is set to premiere on Paramount+ on March 24th.
