Harrison Ford Was Initially Confused By Indiana Jones' Costume and He Had To Staple The Fedora To His Head

When Harrison Ford was first presented with the Indiana Jones costume that he’d be wearing in Steven Spielberg and George LucasRaiders of the Lost Ark, he was super confused by it. As you know, the costume included a leather jacket, a bullwhip, and a pinch-front fedora that Ford had to staple to his head during production so that it would not fly off during action scenes. Seriously, Ford told GQ during an interview that he still has the staple scars.

Ford shared his reaction to seeing the costume for the first time, saying:

“It was presented to me as an aspect of character in the first film. My questions about it were many. Why am I wearing a leather jacket in the jungle? Isn’t it hot here? Why am I carrying a whip? What am I going to do with a f-king whip? I’m going to whip people?”

It was explained to Ford by Spielberg and Lucas that the outfit was “an evocation of a time” and “a reflection of movies past.” That was all Ford need to hear, he didn’t question the explanation, so he threw on the costume and the rest is movie history!

I always loved that look of Indiana Jones! It was just such a rugged and badass look and I would wear that outfit every day if it was socially acceptable. I only wear it now when I embark on my own crazy adventures. Seriously, though, when I was a kid I just wanted to be Indiana Jones. This might just be one of my favorite movie costumes of all time.
