HARRY POTTER HBO Series Casts Dobby, Ginny Weasley and Tom Riddle for Season 2
HBO’s Harry Potter series hasn’t even premiered yet, but the next trip to Hogwarts is already taking shape. Season 2 is moving forward with three important additions from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, including a certain house-elf who has a habit of making Harry’s life much more complicated.
Lenny Rush has been cast as Dobby, Bonnie Hill will play Ginny Weasley, and Billy Barratt has landed the role of Tom Riddle for the second season of HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation.
Hill is taking over the Ginny role from Gracie Cochrane, who plays the character in Season 1. Cochrane exited the series “due to unforeseen circumstances,” making Hill the new Ginny as the story heads into her much more substantial Chamber of Secrets storyline.
Those are three pretty major characters to lock down for Season 2. Dobby makes his memorable entrance into Harry’s world with some very questionable attempts to protect him, while Ginny becomes a key part of the mystery unfolding at Hogwarts. Tom Riddle, of course, brings one of the book’s most important revelations into play.
Season 1 has completed filming and is scheduled to premiere on HBO on December 25. Meanwhile, Season 2 is already in pre-production at Leavesden Studios outside London and will adapt the second novel in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series.
HBO describes its new adaptation like this: “There is nothing special about Harry Potter — or so his Aunt Petunia tells him. But when a mysterious letter of admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry arrives,
“it opens the door to a hidden world of magic, friendship and adventure. Yet behind Hogwarts’ enchanted walls lie dark secrets. Harry must find the courage to prove himself against the darkest wizard of all.”
Dominic McLaughlin leads the series as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
The larger Hogwarts cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, along with dozens of other actors bringing Rowling’s characters to the small screen.
The Harry Potter TV series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, while Mark Mylod serves as an executive producer and will direct multiple episodes.
HBO is producing the series in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Rowling also serves as an executive producer.
