Hayao Miyazaki Is Not Retiring and Is Already Working on Ideas for a New Film!

Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and Heron is being marketed as Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, but it seems like that isn’t really the case! Studio Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka recently shared at the film’s TIFF premiere that Miyazaki is not thinking about retirement, he’s thinking about the next film he wants to make.

In an interview with CBC on the red carpet Nishioka said about Miyazaki:

“Other people say that this might be his last film, but he doesn’t feel that way at all. He is currently working on ideas for a new film. He comes into his office every day and does that. This time, he’s not going to announce his retirement at all. He’s continuing working just as he has always done.”

Miyazaki is 83-years-old and a master of animation. While he has earned a retirement, I love that he is still excited to continue to follow his passion and do what he loves! He truly loves the work, and like Clint Eastwood, he’s just going to keep making movies until his time on this Earth is over. So, with all this being said, I’m excited to see what he does next!

The Boy and the Heron opened earlier this summer in Japan under the title How Do You Live? It’s set to open in North American theaters on December 8th.
