Hayden Christensen Couldn’t Stop Making Sound Effects While Filming STAR WARS Lightsaber Battles
Give an actor a lightsaber and apparently it becomes very difficult not to make the sound effects yourself. Hayden Christensen learned that firsthand while filming the Star Wars prequels, when his enthusiasm for lightsaber combat became visible enough that George Lucas had to call him out.
Christensen spent plenty of time swinging a lightsaber as Anakin Skywalker in the prequel trilogy, and those elaborate fights required the actors to perform with prop weapons that obviously didn't produce the familiar hums, clashes, and whooshes fans know from the movies. Christensen's brain decided to fill in the missing audio.
During Disney's D23 Expo, Christensen joined Ahsoka stars Rosario Dawson and Eman Esfandi for an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, where they were asked about the secret to pulling off a great lightsaber fight.
Dawson immediately pointed out one important rule: Don't make the lightsaber sounds yourself. Christensen knew exactly what she was talking about. In fact, Lucas had to personally remind him about it while they were making the Star Wars prequels.
“It took me a while to stop doing the sound effects. When we were doing the prequels, I — on a few occasions, George Lucas would come up to me and say, ‘Hayden, it looks really good, but I can see your mouth moving.
“You gotta stop doing that.’ But I think it’s something that everyone struggles with for a little bit. And then you figure out, ‘Oh, I gotta stop doing that.’”
It's kinda fun imagining Christensen locked into one of Anakin's intense lightsaber battles, hitting all of the choreography, only for Lucas to notice that Darth Vader himself is standing there making lightsaber noises with his mouth.
It's also incredibly relatable. Hand somebody a lightsaber and ask them to swing it around without making a "vwoom" sound. That's practically a Jedi trial in itself.
Christensen has talked about the habit before. During the Star Wars Celebration 40th Anniversary panel, he explained that Ewan McGregor was doing it as well while playing Obi-Wan Kenobi. Christensen apparently didn't even realize he was making the noises until somebody pointed it out.
So yes, two of the most famous Jedi in Star Wars history were basically doing the same thing generations of kids have done while fighting with toy lightsabers in their living rooms.
Whatever criticisms have been thrown at the Star Wars prequel trilogy over the years, Christensen's Anakin Skywalker has found a whole new level of appreciation among fans. His return to the franchise was a huge deal when he appeared in Obi-Wan Kenobi, giving audiences another confrontation between Anakin and his former Jedi Master.
Christensen later returned again in Ahsoka, appearing as Anakin through flashbacks and as a Force ghost. The series is set to return for Season 2 in January 2027, keeping plenty of possibilities open for Anakin to remain part of Ahsoka Tano's story.
Christensen also seems to genuinely enjoy being part of the Star Wars universe again. He's spoken graciously about the support he's received from fans, and he's even had some fun with Stormtroopers while visiting Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge with his daughter at the Disney theme parks.
After the rough reception the prequels received when they originally hit theaters, it's been cool watching Christensen come back and get this much love from the Star Wars community.
Hopefully, Christensen still gets more opportunities to pick one up as Anakin. With more Star Wars movies and Disney+ shows on the way, there's always room for another appearance, and seeing Anakin in action.
