HBO Cancels Lily-Rose Depp and The Weekend's THE IDOL After One Season and I Don't Think Anyone Is Surprised

HBO has pulled the plug on the controversial series The Idol after one season. The series came from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, and it starred Lily-Rose Depp. This cancellation isn’t a big surprise as the production of Season 1 did not go well as there were extensive reshoots following the departure of director Amy Seimetz.

According to a report from Rolling Stone, the production of this series had “gone wildly, disgustingly off the rails.” Sources say that after a change in directors with Levinson taking over for Amy Seimetz there was a “disturbing” turn, creating an insane working environment.

The Idol is set against the backdrop of the music industry in Los Angeles. “After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”

I have no idea how the series turned out because I haven’t watched it. It just didn’t look very interesting to me. Some of the cast members have mentioned the possibility of a second season during interviews, but the creators apparently didn’t come into the production process with a plan for another season.

HBO said in a statement: “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

The rest of the cast includes Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Jennie Ruby Jane, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennot, Hari Nef, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, Ramsey, and Hank Azaria.

Did any of you watch The Idol? If so, what did you think?
