HBO is Developing Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT Movie
The punk rock band Green Day has been trying to get their American Idiot movie off the ground since the album's release in 2004. Well, it looks like it's finally going to happen! Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong recently revealed that HBO is backing the project and that he'll be reprising his own Broadway role as the character of St. Jimmy. He explains:
"That’s the plan right now, yeah. We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment."
I'm excited that this American Idiot movie is actually happening! I've been a fan of Green Day since I was in junior high school, and American Idiot is a brilliantly written album. It's a punk rock opera that tells a coming of age story about three small-town boys. One joins the armed forces, another moves to the city and takes up drugs, the third stays home and gets his girlfriend pregnant.
Back in 2011, Tom Hanks jumped on board to produce it and in 2013 playwright Rolin Jones came on board to write and polish up the script. I assume Hanks is still attached as a producer as he has strong ties with HBO, which seems like the perfect home for a project like this. I can't wait to see how it turns out!
