Henry Cavill on Not Returning to Play Superman - "My Turn to Wear the Cape Has Passed"
James Gunn recently announced that he is writing the next Superman movie that will focus on a younger version of the character. It was also confirmed that Henry Cavill will not be returning to reprise his role as the Man of Steel. The actor has responded to this news in a post he shared on Instagram, and it sounds like this is it, and he’s officially hanging up the cape for good.
“I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish. them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
It’s definitely a bummer that we won’t see Cavill again as Superman. I really did love him in the role, he managed to capture Superman’s spirit, but Gunn and Safran have a different vision for the character that we have yet to see. Cavill added:
“For those who have been by side through the years, we can mourn for a bit. But then we must remember, Superman is still around. My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”
Gunn shared that there are a “number of exciting possibilities” to work with Cavill again in the future, but it will not be as Superman.
