James Gunn Writing New SUPERMAN Movie and Henry Cavill Will Not Play the Man of Steel
James Gunn has announced that he will be writing a new Superman movie, but the big news is that Henry Cavill will not be returning to reprise his role. This is something I’ve known about for some time and I’ve been teasing it, and now here we are.
The Superman story that Gunn will be writing will put focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life. Now, while Cavill will not be reprising his role as Superman in the film, Gunn and Peter Safran have been talking about other projects to work on.
Gunn explained in a series of tweets:
Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.
Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.
But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.
So, it looks like DC Studios is to close the curtain on the Snyderverse and start fresh. It makes sense to do that, and I’m actually looking forward to seeing what this future of the DC Cinematic Universe ends up being.
Gunn previously said that “Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority." This first film is going to set the tone for what the rest of this new DCU is going to be. They are setting on a mission to tell the “Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects.”
Gunn is a super-talented filmmaker and storyteller, so bring it on! I’m ready to see what his vision of the DCU is going to be! With this new story focusing on a younger version of Superman, will they take the Smallville approach?
