HEREDITARY Director Ari Aster Says His New Horror Film MIDSOMMAR Is "Wizard of Oz For Perverts"
For those of you who are expecting for director Ari Aster’s new horror film Midsommar to be like his last film Hereditary, that’s not what you’re going to get. It sounds like this is going to be a different kind of beast.
I was a big fan of Hereditary, so I am very much looking forward to seeing this new film of his. The story follows a couple visiting a friend in Sweden during the traditional midsummer festivities. The trip starts out pleasantly but then quickly turns into a terrifying, violent, and bizarre ordeal thanks to a pagan cult. If you’ve ever had an encounter with an evil pagan cult, then this is a movie I’m sure you’ll be able to relate to.
The director explained in the past that the horror movie is a “Scandinavian folk horror” story and also said that the film is “an apocalyptic breakup movie,” and explained that the “recent death of the main character’s parents casts a sense of dread over the proceedings.”
In a recent interview with Vulture, Aster was asked about the film, and while he didn’t reveal too much, he did say it’s going to be different from Hereditary:
“It’s a breakup movie, in the same way that Hereditary is a family tragedy. It’s less overtly a horror movie, but it’s still working in that same space. It’s very macabre. But people shouldn’t go in expecting Hereditary.”
He then went on to offer an interesting explanation of it saying, “It’s a Wizard of Oz for perverts.” I’m not even sure what in the hell that means, but it’s certainly an intriguing statement!
The film stars Jack Reynor, Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia, and Archie Madekwe.
Midsommar opens in theaters on August 9, 2019. If you want to watch the trailer again for the movie for a little reminder, click here.
