Hideo Kojima Explains He Won't Make Movies Because He's a "Perfectionist" and He'd Never Finish One if He Started
Hideo Kojima, the creator of epic games such as Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, is a huge fan of movies. He shares his thoughts on the films he watches on social media all the time, but don’t ever expect to see him actually make one himself.
Kojima doesn’t want to make movies because he’s too much of a perfectionist and if he ever started one, he’d never finish it. There’s a Hideo Kojima documentary that recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and that film touches on Kojima’s love of movies.
Kojima attended a Q&A panel after the screening that was hosted by Geoff Keighley, and when asked about his love of movies, he said: “For me, movies are special. And it’s so special, I can’t do it.”
He went on to say that he’s "a perfectionist," and the way he works with video games wouldn’t really work for making movies. He explained: “In games, no matter how much I make it perfect, it doesn’t end. Movies are two hours and I have to mix in everything, so I think I will never finish making it if I start making a movie. I’ll be doing it all day.”
Kojima is currently helping develop the live-action film adaptation of Death Stranding, and while he’s “deeply involved,” he’s not directing the movie. He said he’s “involved in producing, supervising, plotting, look, design and content of the film adaptation of DS, just not in charge of directing.”
Kojima did get “a lot of offers” to direct movies. But, as you might imagine, now that he’s the head of a game studio, Kojima doesn’t want to leave. He explained: “If I were to film and direct a movie, I would have to get out of the studio for about a year, and I can’t do that.”
