Hideo Kojima Says OD Is “Progressing Smoothly” and Will Test the “Thresholds of Fear”

Hideo Kojima is cooking up something seriously weird with OD, and production on his mysterious horror game is moving right along.

During an Xbox broadcast at Tokyo Game Show, Hideo Kojima shared an update on the project, confirming that development is progressing smoothly after performance capture and ADR work resumed this year.

While Kojima still isn’t ready to explain exactly what players will be doing in OD, he continues to describe it as something very different from a traditional horror game.

Kojima said: "Performance capture and ADR recording, which had been paused during the SAG strike, resumed this year, and production is proceeding on schedule. Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and the team have delivered intense and outstanding performances, which I can't wait for you all to see.

"OD is a completely new kind of game that tests the thresholds of fear," he continues. "Through constant experimentation and iteration, the project is steadily taking shape. We look forward to sharing more information later down the line."

There’s still a huge question hanging over OD: What the hell is this game? We don’t have a release window yet, and many of its core details remain under wraps. Kojima has previously talked about wanting to "scan a ghost" into the game, because apparently making a normal horror game just wouldn’t be enough.

He also joked that his team may have accidentally captured a ghost in the studio already. That possibility apparently called for some supernatural quality control.

"That's why we went to the shrine together with Microsoft to make sure that we have a safe build of the game," Kojima said at the time. So, hopefully OD ships ghost-free. But, you know, maybe haunted is the better version!

Kojima also used Tokyo Game Show to share news about Physint, his upcoming espionage action game. Bill Skarsgård, known for John Wick: Chapter 4 and Nosferatu, has been cast as the lead actor. Kojima said he and Skarsgård are "long-time fans of each others' work."

For now, OD remains the stranger of the two, especially when its creator is talking about ghosts, experimental horror, and testing how much fear players can handle.

That sounds like exactly the kind of bizarre Hideo Kojima project I can’t wait to jump into and experience!
