UNTIL DAWN 2 Reveal Trailer Sends Players Into a Nightmare on a Haunted Tropical Island

When Until Dawn launched in 2015, it became one of the most memorable horror experiences on the PS4. Despite a complicated road to release, the interactive slasher adventure connected with players in a way few horror games have managed since.

More than a decade later, PlayStation is finally bringing the franchise back with Until Dawn 2, and its first trailer has revealed a chilling new setting and story.

The sequel made its debut during PlayStation's June State of Play presentation, giving fans their first look at the next chapter in the horror series.

This time around, development duties have been handed to Firesprite, the studio known for projects including Run Sackboy! Run!, The Persistence, and Horizon Call of the Mountain. While there's no exact release date yet, Until Dawn 2 is currently scheduled to launch on PS5 in 2027.

Rather than returning to the snowy mountains of the original game, Until Dawn 2 heads somewhere much more exotic and potentially much more terrifying. The story unfolds on Akishima Island, a fictional tropical location described as being "haunted by dark stories" and hiding "dreadful and heartbreaking secrets."

The game follows a group of ghost hunters who star in a paranormal television series called Dead True. After securing a deal with a television network, the crew heads to the island expecting to manufacture scares for viewers. Instead, they find themselves trapped in a genuine nightmare.

According to the PlayStation Blog, the team is known for staging its scares but has now "come face-to-face with real horrors and must start living up to their reputation to survive until dawn."

The reveal trailer leans heavily into classic slasher movie ingredients. There are glimpses of romantic encounters, gruesome deaths, and a mysterious killer stalking the cast. It looks like Firesprite is embracing the same horror movie energy that made the original game such a fan favorite.

Of course, an Until Dawn game wouldn't be complete without player-driven choices shaping the story. The trailer confirms that the familiar life-or-death decision-making system is returning, reminding players that "everyone can live" and "everyone can die."

Firesprite also revealed that relationships between characters will influence certain story branches, potentially sending events "spinning off towards unforeseen consequences." Preserving that choice-and-consequence structure appears to be a major priority for the studio as it takes over the franchise.

While the cast appears to be entirely new, fans did spot one familiar face. Peter Stormare returns as Dr. Hill, the unsettling psychiatrist who played a key role in the original game's psychological twists.

There's also still some mystery surrounding where the sequel fits into the larger Until Dawn universe. The controversial 2024 remake ended with a teaser showing Hayden Panettiere's character Sam waking up with a significant wound on her arm before hearing an unknown person call her name.

Whether that scene connects directly to Until Dawn 2, another project, or an abandoned storyline remains unclear.

Sam doesn't appear anywhere in the new trailer, but with the game's release still a long way off, there is plenty of time for additional surprises and connections to emerge.

The original Until Dawn was developed by Supermassive Games, which stepped away from the franchise after releasing the VR spin-off Until Dawn: Rush of Blood in 2016.

Since then, the studio has remained active in the interactive horror space with The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry. While those games built loyal audiences, none quite captured the same cultural impact as Until Dawn.

That may explain why PlayStation decided it was finally time to revisit the series. Based on this first trailer, Until Dawn 2 looks ready to deliver another round of terrifying choices, brutal deaths, and desperate attempts to survive until sunrise.
