Hugh Jackman Hints He Isn't Finished Playing Wolverine After AVENGERS: SECRET WARS
It looks like Hugh Jackman still has plenty of fight left in him as Wolverine. After what many fans assumed would be a fitting farewell in Logan back in 2017, Jackman surprised everyone by returning for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Now, with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, it sounds like he has no intention of hanging up the adamantium claws anytime soon.
For years, fans have wondered when Marvel Studios would finally recast Logan for its upcoming X-Men reboot. While that still seems like an eventual certainty, Jackman's latest comments suggest that day might be farther away than many expected.
Deadpool & Wolverine even had some fun with the idea of another actor taking over the role. The film featured a surprise appearance from Henry Cavill, who suited up as a Wolverine Variant affectionately dubbed "Cavillrine." It marked the first time in more than two decades that someone other than Jackman officially played Wolverine on screen.
Still, as Marvel heads toward Avengers: Doomsday, Jackman is expected to remain the MCU's primary version of James Howlett.
Speaking in a new interview with PBS, the actor was asked about eventually passing the role on to someone else. His response made it sound like he isn't thinking about retirement anytime soon.
"I'm 57. I'm doing it till I'm 90. So, you know, I'll do a little time capsule for them." Jackman also made it clear that he has no interest in telling a future Wolverine actor how to approach the character.
"I'm not going to say anything to whoever plays him, 'cause no one said anything to me, which I really am thrilled about. And I had not read the comics, so I was just coming to it fresh. And I learned a lot over the years."
He went on to explain that every actor should have the freedom to create their own version of Logan. "Of course, I've got my own take, but it must be melding in with me in some way. I hope someone just comes in and does whatever the f*** they want and makes it their own."
There have already been rumors suggesting that Jackman's Wolverine could remain part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe even after Avengers: Secret Wars. While Marvel Studios will almost certainly introduce a new Wolverine for its next X-Men franchise, Jackman continuing to appear as a Multiverse Variant feels increasingly possible.
Whether that means future X-Men movies, solo adventures, or other MCU projects is anyone's guess, but it doesn't seem like he's eager to walk away from one of the most iconic superhero roles ever brought to the big screen.
For now, fans know that Marvel has major plans for Jackman's Logan Variant in Avengers: Doomsday, and if his latest comments are any indication, those plans might extend well beyond the Multiverse Saga.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18.
